Friday's Mega Millions jackpot rises to $72 million; 1 player won the second prize

The Mega Millions lottery grand prize has been pumped up to $72 million (cash value $50.2 million) for the next drawing in the multistate lottery game Friday night. The grand prize amount has been rolled over since no player matched all five white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball number to take the $61 million grand prize Tuesday night. The winning numbers from Tuesday, June 29th, 2021 drawing were 07-38-50-52-69 with Mega Ball 21 and Megaplier 3.
Even though the grand prize was not hit Tuesday evening, Mega Millions had some huge winners. There was a single ticket that matched all five numbers and won the 2nd prize. The 1 second prize winning ticket(s) purchased in will collect $1,000,000 cash each.
Additional prizes won Tuesday evening included 9 tickets that matched 4 white numbers as well as the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Other prizes won Tuesday night included 210 tickets that matched four white numbers and won $500. There were 627 tickets that matched 3 white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and also won $200.
With nine different prize tiers, there were 924,624 winning tickets sold across the nation in the Tuesday, June 29th, 2021 drawing.
Mega Millions game can be played in 43 states and D.C. Roughly 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back to the players in prize winnings. Around 15% goes to commission of retailers and lottery operating costs. Around 35% total sales is used to support government services, education and charities in the participating states. To play Mega Millions, select 5 numbers from a set of 70 and pick one Mega Ball number from a set of 25. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to pay $1 extra to buy the Megaplier, which multiplies the original winnings 2 to 5 times except jackpot. The overall chances of winning is about 1 to 14. The chances of matching 6 Mega Millions numbers are about 1 in 302 million. The minimum Mega Millions grand prize is 40 million dollar. The annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners can select one-time lump-sum cash payout option instead.
Contrary to other Mega Millions states, all the 9 prize levels of California Mega Millions are parimutuel, instead of non-jackpot prize having a set value. This causes different amounts of prize for equivalent winning tickets sold in California when compared to those sold in other forty three states. For instance, the 2nd Mega Millions prizes is $1,000,000 could pay the winner more than a million dollar due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, California state lottery does not have Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
