Mega Millions jackpot increases to $527,000,000 Friday, August 23rd, 2024; One second prize ticket sold

The Mega Millions game grand prize is on the move again. The grand prize for the Friday, August 23rd, 2024 drawing increases to $527,000,000 with the cash option at $$261.9 million. The winning numbers drawn Tuesday night, August 20th, 2024 were 05, 20, 26, 49, 51 with Mega Ball number 24 and Megaplier x4.
Though the grand prize was not awarded Tuesday evening, some people still walked away with huge pile of cash. There was a sole lucky ticket matched all five numbers but missed Mega Ball number, which won the 2nd prize. The one lucky ticket(s) purchased in AZ, each won one million dollar cash by matching all 5 white ball numbers.
Other prizes won Tuesday night included 17 tickets that matched 4 white numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Additional winners Tuesday night included 450 tickets that matched 4 lotto numbers and won $500. There were 1162 tickets that matched 3 white ball numbers as well as the Mega Ball and also won $200.
With 9 different prize tiers, there were 1,890,700 winning tickets sold across U.S. in the Tuesday, August 20th, 2024 drawing.
Mega Millions can be played in 43 states and Washington DC. It holds the record biggest jackpot of $656 million in North American lottery history. Approximately 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back on the players through prizes. Roughly 15% goes to commission of retailers and lottery operation expenses. Roughly 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating states. Mega Millions drawings are held 2 times a week every Tuesday and Friday night at 7:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Mega Millions game uses a 5/70+1/25 system to randomly choose winning numbers. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot is $40,000,000. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners can select one-time lump-sum cash payout instead.
Not like other Mega Millions participants, all the nine prize tiers of California Mega Millions are pari-mutuel, rather than non-jackpot prize having a fixed value. This results in different prize amounts for equivalent winners sold in California when compared to those sold in other 43 Mega Millions states. One example is, the second Mega Millions prizes is a million dollar could pay the winner more than a million dollar due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, California state lottery doesn't have Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
