The jackpot for Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing soars to $498,000,000

Tuesday's Mega Millions jackpot is going to be worth an estimated $498,000,000 (cash value $$245.3 million), since no player hit all six winning numbers in Friday night's drawing. The numbers from Friday night, August 16th, 2024 were 22, 38, 48, 51, 61 and the Mega Ball was 05, Megaplier was 3. No one won the Mega Millions jackpot in the past 21 draws since Friday, June 7th, 2024.The last jackpot was won by a single ticket sold in IL, matched all six numbers for a $560 million top prize.
Although the grand prize was not hit Friday evening, Mega Millions had some huge winners. There were two tickets that correctly matched the first 5 numbers and won the second prize. The two second prize winning ticket(s) purchased in CA,NJ will collect $1,000,000 cash each.
Other prizes won Friday evening included 19 tickets that matched 4 white numbers as well as the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Other winners Friday evening included 419 tickets that matched four lotto numbers and won $500. Other prizes won included 1082 tickets that matched 3 white numbers in addition to the Mega Ball and won $200.
With nine different ways to win, there were 1,830,002 winning tickets sold nationwide in the Friday, August 16th, 2024 drawing.
Mega Millions is played in 43 states and D.C. It holds the record highest jackpot of $656 million in U.S. lottery history. Roughly 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back towards the players in prizes. Approximately 15% goes to commission of retailers and lottery operation expenses. Roughly 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating lottery states. Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 7:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to spend 1 extra dollar to buy the Megaplier, which multiplies the original winnings 2 to 5 times but not grand prize. The odds of winning any prizes is about 1 to 14. The chances of matching 6 Mega Millions numbers are about 1 in 302 million. The minimum Mega Millions advertised grand prize starts at $40 million. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners can choose one lump sum cash payout option instead.
Not like other Mega Millions participants, all the 9 prize levels of California Mega Millions are pari-mutuel, rather than non-jackpot prize having a set amount. This causes different amounts of prize for equivalent winners sold in the state of California when compared to those sold in other 43 lotteries. By way of example, the second Mega Millions prizes is $1,000,000 could pay the winner over $1000,000 due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, CA state lottery does not offer Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
